Entertainment Inc. and Universal Orlando Resort are partnering to create the world's first fully immersive Harry Potter themed environment based on the bestselling books by J.K. Rowling and blockbuster feature films from Warner Bros.  Envisioned as a "theme park within a theme park" and titled "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," the new environment will become part of the experience within Universal's Islands of Adventure theme park at the Universal Orlando Resort.

"Over the years we've received thousands of letters from fans around the world wishing they could visit Hogwarts and the wonderful locations described in each of J.K. Inspired by J.K. Rowling's compelling stories and characters - and faithful to the visual landscapes of the films - "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" will provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience the magical world of Harry and his friends.  The fully immersive, themed land will enable guests to visit some of the most iconic locations found in the books and the films including the village of Hogsmeade, and even Hogwarts castle itself.

(January 28, 2010) - Visitors to the Ollivanders wand shop at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will step into one of the most iconic scenes from the bestselling Harry Potter books and blockbuster feature films. With the assistance of a live actor, along with amazing special effects, guests of Ollivanders will get to experience the same type of magical moment Harry had in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" when a wand "chooses them."

Universal Orlando Resort has worked closely with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and the Warner Bros. Harry Potter brand team to make this moment as authentic, magical and immersive as possible for guests - a theme carried throughout the entire experience at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. 

"When guests visit Ollivanders, they will instantly feel like they're in the shop from the films. It's an intimate, single-windowed building, with the same signs, colors and other details read about in the books and seen in the films," said Alan Gilmore, art director of the Harry Potter films and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. "But more importantly, visitors to Ollivanders will experience for themselves the magical moment that forever changed Harry's life."

Inside Ollivanders, visitors will be surrounded by thousands of multi-colored dusty wand boxes stacked on shelves from floor to ceiling. They will be welcomed by an inquisitive Wandkeeper, who will guide them through an enchanting experience to find their very own wand. First the Wandkeeper will ask the guest a few special questions and then select the first wand for them to try. Just like Harry, the guest will be prompted by the Wandkeeper to give the wand a wave, and a series of magical mishaps will occur until the right fit is found.

In addition to the magic featured in Ollivanders, guests will experience many other magical happenings at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, including a Howler featured in the Owl Post shop front window whose ranting can be heard by guests as they pass by; The Monster Book of Monsters in Dervish and Banges that will snarl and growl at anyone who tries to get too close, and the Hog's Head which can be seen puffing his jowls at visitors who visit the Hog's Head pub.

(February 3, 2010) - This Sunday, Universal Orlando Resort will launch a brand-new, national commercial for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter during Super Bowl XLIV.  The ad, created by Universal Orlando and Rosso Media Ltd in the UK, offers guests a look into the magic that awaits them at the highly anticipated theme park experience set to open Spring 2010.  And, for fans who can't wait until Super Bowl Sunday, the national commercial will be viewable through UniversalOrlando.com starting TODAY.  

Set to air during the first half of the Super Bowl, the ad features all-new footage and pulls viewers directly into the new area - from Hogsmeade, to the immensity of Hogwarts castle.  The commercial also features Harry Potter and two children who get a glimpse of the excitement guests can expect to experience when they visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Today, we kick-off our Five Questions series, where we find out more about the creative minds, processes and inspirations behind bringing this fantastic vision to life. 

First, we are talking with Alan Gilmore, Art Director for the Harry Potter film series and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Working on many of the Harry Potter films, Alan Gilmore joined the Universal Orlando creative team to art direct The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  An architect and a designer, Alan has worked on numerous films including The Bourne Ultimatum and Notting Hill, as well as the well-known TV series, The Tudors.  Born in Ireland, with a permanent home in London, Alan moved his family to Orlando to work on bringing the detail and authenticity of the Harry Potter movies to life in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Q: We know that, while very popular in the U.S., Harry Potter is a major part of popular culture in the U.K.  So, how did the story inspire your imagination?

A: Harry Potter has an enormous fan base who are very interested in his world and the fact that his world is located in the U.K.  And, because the stories are based in our popular culture, the world Harry inhabits is exactly what we expect it to be. The landscape Stuart Craig, the production designer for the films, created for the films is entirely plausible and rooted in reality.  Harry's school and house felt very familiar but also have an extra quality -- a sense of heightened reality.  So our goal in creating The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was to create a place based in that reality, which you can really believe in.  This real world setting made it quite interesting to imagine all these spaces and places Harry could exist in.

To actually be involved in the Harry Potter film projects was very exciting. I have known Stuart for several years. The chance to work with him and learn how he designs, and then see how he realized his spaces and his fantastic visions, was a really unique experience.

Q: With your job as art director, both on the films and here at Universal Orlando Resort, what has been your role in bringing The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to life?

A: I see myself as a conduit, shepherding Stuart's design and acting as a guardian for his vision and designs from all of the movies.  I have worked alongside the film design team from London for a long time now and have learned so much from them.  We sourced from an extensive back catalog of sets and settings from the films, and many of the spaces we created for the films have been reinterpreted for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

In trying to bring Harry's world to life I have worked closely with the team at Universal Creative, in a very new way, and we've had to bring settings seen remotely in the films close together here in Orlando.  The overall composition was very carefully considered. 

We have had to invent some new elements as well. We have developed Hogsmeade in great detail, including features specifically created for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We also brought a lot of iconic stores into Hogsmeade which is something the fans will be quite excited to visit and experience.  

Q: What has been the biggest challenge in bringing the visuals from the film to life here at Universal Orlando Resort, and what has the main difference been between designing for the two?

A: The film world is a very different challenge to the theme park world.  In the film world the viewer is the camera.  You know where your viewer is, and you can design to that viewer, composing the settings from one or two viewpoints.  Whereas, with the theme park world, it has to work from every angle.  We had to think about multiple angles, from a child's point-of-view, to a very tall person's point-of-view, and for everyone in between. 

I'll be honest, everything was challenging.  We had a very good run up of two years, and it gave us a lot of time to work out the details. For example, the rock that Hogwarts sits on was daunting at first but we soon found a way to create the most realistic finish in any theme park.  It is a great success.  The snow was also very difficult.  We really wanted to have snow everywhere, creating the most amazing snowscape and that cold Scottish feeling.  Psychologically the snow creates a sense of a lower temperature.  To try and bring that cold to Orlando, that is quite hard.  In the end, I hope what we created gives guests a good experience!

Q: What element(s) of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter are you the most proud of and excited about?  Or are there favorite elements from the films that were you are now able to realize in full?

A: Oh, absolutely, I think the castle is the primary example of being able to realize the visuals from the film on such a grand scale, it has never been built to this extent before.  We made a very concerted effort to bring Hogwarts to life, making it really look impressive from every angle.

Hogsmeade and the Three Broomsticks is another area that has really come off beautifully.  The Three Broomsticks is an incredible space, the detail and finishes are amazing.  This is a great joy to me.

But overall, I think the detail, the absolute rigorous pushing of detail is beyond compare.  Everything is correct.  Our mantra was authenticity, and I worked very closely with the entire team to make sure we have every area detailed as much as it possibly could be.  There is hardly a corner that you can't look in that does not have some amazing quality of detail, finish and paint. 

I brought many film making techniques to this project also.  A layer of aging was applied throughout making everything appear to be old and lived in.  I think the feeling of actually entering Harry's world is what people will take away from visiting. 

Q: If you could give a tour of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to guests, what would be the first thing you would tell them and what would be the first thing you would want them to experience?

A: I would want them to come through the entry arch at Hogsmeade and take a moment to just absorb the amazing spectacle in front of them.  The viewpoint just beyond the arch beside the train looking toward the castle is the most encompassing view of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  It really gives you a sense of this amazing place.  It should be quite magical to see the reactions on the fans and guests faces as I am sure this will be the first time most people will have ever been in an environment like this.  So, for me, I think this starting point is where you want to have your first experience and explore Harry's world.

(June 18, 2010) - The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort celebrates its grand opening today with help from Harry Potter film actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, James and Oliver Phelps, Matthew Lewis, Bonnie Wright, Michael Gambon, Warwick Davis and thousands of excited fans - officially becoming the only place in the world where the adventures of Harry Potter come to life.

More than five years in the making, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has become the most highly anticipated entertainment experience of 2010.  The Harry Potter books and films have captured the hearts and minds of millions - and now, guests can experience the adventure first-hand at Universal Orlando Resort.  The spectacularly themed area, inspired by J.K. Rowling's compelling stories and characters, features multiple themed attractions, shops and a restaurant - all faithful to the books and films.  

Visitors to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be swept into the adventures of Harry Potter.  They will tour Hogwarts castle, shop in Hogsmeade and dine in the Three Broomsticks.  Other adventures will allow them to fly with Harry, ride on a dragon, sample Butterbeer, eat exploding sweets - and experience all the magic and adventure of the Harry Potter books and films.

Universal Orlando Marks Moment with 1,000 Complimentary Butterbeers

ORLANDO, Fla. (January 6, 2011) - In celebration of selling its millionth Butterbeer inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando Resort shared 1,000 complimentary Butterbeers with guests on the streets of Hogsmeade.

Butterbeer appears as a favorite drink inside the Harry Potter books and films and is only available inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  It is a nonalcoholic, frothy drink reminiscent of shortbread and butterscotch and is served cold or frozen. 

Much has been written about Butterbeer since it made its debut on June 18, 2010, making it one of the most talked about beverages of 2010.  There has been much speculation about its secret ingredients - but Universal Orlando will not share the closely guarded recipe. Universal has implemented special security procedures to protect the details.

Butterbeer quickly became a guest favorite.   To help meet the strong demand, Universal Orlando added a fourth Butterbeer location within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

(July 25, 2011) – Universal Orlando Resort announced today that special vacation packages will go on sale Sunday, July 31st that will give guests the opportunity to attend “Harry Potter Home Entertainment Celebration.” This special event will be hosted by Warner Bros. and will celebrate a decade of movie history by allowing fans to share their love for the Harry Potter films. The event will take place from Friday, November 11, to Sunday, November 13, at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, home to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

During this special event, guests can celebrate their favorite memories and stories of Harry Potter with filmmakers, cast members and fellow fans.  While all theme park guests will be able to enjoy The Wizarding World of Harry Potter during their visit, only a limited number of guests and those who buy special event packages will have access to exclusive benefits such as:

Throughout the three-day celebration, guests will also be able to explore The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where the wonder, excitement and adventure of the Harry Potter films come to life.  They will enjoy experiences such as soaring above Hogwarts on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, sipping Butterbeer in Hogsmeade and being inside Ollivanders and seeing a wand choose its wizard.   

The primary way to participate in celebration events is by purchasing one of Universal Orlando's special vacation packages.  Packages are extremely limited and go on sale at noon EDT on Sunday, July 31. Guests can choose from two vacation package options:  the Celebration Vacation Package and the Premier Vacation Package. Hollywood, CA (Dec. 6, 2011) - Warner Bros. Entertainment and Universal Parks and Resorts today announced a partnership to bring The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - the enormously popular themed entertainment environment which debuted in Orlando in June 2010 - to Universal Studios Hollywood.

The two companies also announced their plans to significantly expand The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood will be as impressive as what has been created in Orlando - and is expected to transform tourism in Los Angeles for decades to come. It will be a fully immersive environment for the entire family that brings the stories of Harry Potter to life and is faithful to the visual landscape of the films, including a majestic Hogwarts castle to serve as the centerpiece of the themed environment.  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood will be created with the same commitment to authenticity and the same level of talent and resources as its Orlando counterpart.
